The origins of the Madras fabric go back to the village of Madraspatnam near modern day Chennai in the 12 th Century. Local workers picked the soft fibres from native trees wove them and block printed colourful check designs. The is cultural tradition was picked up and exported by the British and now Madras fabrics and checks are admired the world over. I’ve used the colours of Indian saffron limes and lemons in my check and its cut on our 1950s inspired Hawaiian block with its signature collar.
